teaching philosophy

I respect students as individuals with different backgrounds, skills, and areas of interest. In my classes, I encourage them to engage with course materials from their own unique perspectives, organically linking new learning to their personal experience. I apply my background as a public school librarian, chair of the Oklahoma School Librarians, and a board member of the Oklahoma Library Association to various aspects of library and information science. By interweaving my work and life experience with new subject matter, such as information retrieval, big data, or human computer interaction, I model for students ways to build upon past experience as they learn. This approach spurs creative and innovative thinking in students as they make connections between their own experience and the new knowledge they acquire. ​
